Malta Diaries – Valletta

I can’t big up enough how much I recommend a Winter getaway. Here in the UK we have grey skies, damp feet, and blue moods – and there’s a good four months of it to get through, so it can be a tough time.

Last year I made a last desperate attempt for the sunshine and headed to Malta. First thing to know if you’re considering a Winter trip to Malta – it won’t be heaving and bustling with people. Malta is a really popular option for older people during the months when other people are still working between the holidays, so if you head here in November time like I did, don’t expect your classic party-holiday vibe.

Secondly, this is not particularly a beach or tropical temperature holiday. If you’re looking to escape for a bikini-clad break this is probably not the location for you, but if, like me, you enjoy holidays where you mooch around beautiful towns and admire the sites, then Malta is perfect!

Day one of our seven day holiday, we headed to the capital, Valletta (pronounced ‘Vi-yet-ta’), as we’d been recommended to check out during our stay. It’s a beautiful city full of surprises – one minute you’re finding yourself lost up and down identical streets, and the next minute you come out onto a sea view. It almost feels like you’re walking right around the edge of the whole island.

The must-visit from this was the Lower Barrakka Gardens. Luckily by the time we’d made it to the garden the sun had come out, making it perfect for photos. For a fairly compact area the garden is beautiful! And while you’re on this side of the city the views are unbelievable.

Part of this day for us was finding our feet and catching up from our travelling (although it was a very short flight time, we had caught a 5am flight), so we headed back to the hotel for dinner and bedtime.

As I touched on above, the winter months in Malta are mainly occupied by older people seeking Winter sunshine, so we did spend our evening watching line dancing. But it’s always nice for a change of scenery anyway…
