Fulfiling That Wanderlust

I was supposed to be on my way home from Austria right now, after a week half-skiing and half-festival, and probably being a little fragile by this point. Unfortunately, instead of that I’ve spent the week in my house – although, sitting in my sunshiney garden rather than on a 13-hour coach ride hasn’t been all that bad.

But even with that said, it is still a bit gutting to be missing out on a holiday. If anything, I find that it brings out my inner wanderlust even more, and with not being able to go outside to do anything outside, it’s bringing out the cabin fever that little bit more. So, it’s time to get creative with finding ways to fulfil that wanderlust.

Watch travel vlogs
I’ve been working my way through Sammi Maria’s (The Beauty Crush) travel vlogs on YouTube, and Hello October has some great ones in her travel category too. They’re great for getting a bit of a travel fulfilment, as well as picking up some tips and great advice on places to visit, so you can start compiling your list of holidays to plan once we’re out of this lock down.

Read travel blogs
There’s a big range of blog types as well, whether you fancy a travel guide for a specific location, or a photo-based post. My personal favourite at the moment are solo-female traveller posts with advice, as (all being well!) I’ll be solo travelling for the first part of a trip to Hong Kong in October – watch this space, as I am. I’ve popped some of my current favourites below;

The Blonde Abroad… here
Finding Alexx… here
Passport to Eden… here

Read Travel Books
I shared my lovely book, Wanderlust (The Love Assembly) a few posts ago, but I’ve also ordered Instatravel (Aggie Lal), from Amazon, which I cannot wait to arrive (update, this arrived a few days before the post went live)! I love looking through photo-based travel books, especially when they’re from the point of view of a relatable traveller.

Read Travel Novels
If non-fiction travel books aren’t for you, try picking up a fiction travel story. In the past I’ve loved reading “Around the World in 80 Days”, and “The Beach” (for anyone who’s seen the Leonardo film), but if you’re in need of more inspiration Passport to Eden (see above) offers her Book Club, which is brimming with all sorts of travel book ideas.

Look at old holiday photos
Nothing brings out memories quite like looking at holiday photos – yes, you can look at the posts and photos from other people, but if you’re looking at your own you can hear the sounds, smell the smells, and really get the holiday feeling back.

Make a holiday playlist
I’ve got songs that I listened to on different vacations, and as soon as they come on during my shuffle, they take me right back. I’ve popped some of mine below;

Something Good, Alt J… Sunbathing by the Pool in Malta
Losing It, Fisher… Partying in Berlin
Rasputin, Boney M… Finding the cheese room in Berlin

Cook a recipe from a holiday destination
Maybe it’s a destination based recipe, or a recipe that you had in a location, but cooking a recipe not only takes you back through the taste, but also makes you embrace the smells and sights. Plus, it’s an excuse to completely indulge.

Make a wanderlust Pinterest board
Who doesn’t have a Pinterest board dedicated to travel lust? Mine is filled with lavish pools, impressive cities, and exotic forests. Plus I make separate boards for destinations I’m actually going to, which I also add travel tips and advice to, as well as photo inspiration while I’m on holiday. You can find my Wanderlust board here…

Ring your travel buddies for a reminisce
Nothing beats a catch up, especially when you’re talking about great memories. Don’t attempt to fulfil your wanderlust alone, invite your travel buddies to do it with you.

Start Planning
Nothing fulfils a wanderlust like actually planning a holiday. Find a destination you’re desperate to go to, or take a look at short breaks. Maybe don’t go ahead and book anything yet, but there’s nothing wrong with planning practically every detail so you’re ready to go, right?
