Getting the Most from a Short Holiday

Far from travelling at the moment, I’m sat on my bed eating the remains of an Easter Egg, and planning a workout to lose it again in the morning. But I’m hoping that once this is all over we’ll all be heading on holidays to get ourselves back and motivated. In the meantime, here’s a few bits of advice for getting the most from a short holiday.

Plan, Plan, Plan
Planning is key with a short holiday. Take a look at online guides, look at Pinterest, which gives a lot of links to blog guides that are tried and tested, and maybe even invest in a book guide. I’m a stickler for planning in advance, even if I’m going to London for the day – I like to know exactly where to go and how to get there.

Make a Schedule
Once you’ve planned everything you want to see and do, schedule it. The best advice is to look at the locations of everything so you can bunch everything together so you’re wasting as little time as possible in the travelling part of your vacay.

Check out the Travel
On that as well, get an idea of the travel before you arrive, especially for a city break. Take a look at whether there’s Uber in the city, and whether there’s an underground transport link. Take a look also at the tickets you’ll need – it’s good to get an idea of the best ticket types for your budget, for example, if you can use the underground to get to all or most of the activities you have in mind, you might be best to look at multi-day ticket options.

Pinterest Photo Inspiration
In the same way that you should take a look at the things you want to see, take a little look at the photos you want to take.

Stay Central
When planning the holiday itself, aim to book a hotel that’s as centrally based as possible. You can then make it easy to travel to different sections of your location without having as far to travel back each day.

Time Your Flights
Don’t waste the first and last day, book an early flight there and a late flight home to add on another day to your trip. The only thing to be aware of with this is being tired – if you’re going for a super early flight make sure you catch up on sleep, otherwise you’ll just spend the first day sleeping.

Check Out Tours
Look to see if there’s any tours you can use to see more of the city in one go, and without having to do too much extra work and research yourself. A lot of cities in particular offer the bus tours, which my Dad and I did to see pretty much the whole of Malta, and in Berlin we did a walking tour which showed us all the tourism spots in one afternoon.

Speak to Locals
If you’re wondering where will be good locally to eat for lunch, or the quickest way to something you’re wanting to see, speak to a local. This is another great reason to take a local tour – we asked the tour guide for advice on where to head that evening and for advice on Christmas Markets, and it was so much easier and quicker that scrolling through the internet looking for mixed advice.

Download Useful Apps
Apps like City Mapper and Google Maps will cut out so much time of research, because they pretty much do all the work for you.
