Berlin Travel Guide

It seems to me like Berlin is the perfect holiday destination for any city-break lover – especially at Christmas! While I didn’t spend much time in this great city to discover many of its hot spots, I’ve put together a quick little post on the few things that I did find…

Must Sees:
Brandenberg Gate
Not only an important part of Berlin’s history, but also a beautiful place for photos, especially on a blue-sky sort of a day.

Checkpoint Charlie
Very hard to get a great photo of this, but a poignant landmark.

Berlin Wall
While not the prettiest sight to see, it is a massive part of history, and worth taking 5 minutes to spot.

East Side Gallery
The prettier section of the Berlin Wall.
Topography of Terror
At the time of our visit they had a photography exhibition on the Holocaust, but keep an eye out for what’s happening while you’re in the city.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
A haunting experience, you can walk through the stone pillars that have been erected as a memorial. Truly chilling and a poignant visit.

Where To Eat and Drink:
Silo
We went here for brunch, and it was delicious! They have a build-your-own version, which I love!
Christmas Markets
Unfortunately I can’t comment (or reminder) many of the venues we went to for food or drink, most of the food we bought was at one of the Christmas markets we were visiting. Make sure you pick yourself up a Bratwurst while in Germany though!

Things To Do:
Free Walking Tour
Super great option for any travellers on a budget! You do the tour first, and then make your payment at the end dependent on how much you can give/think it’s worth.

Organised Pub Crawl
Guarantees a group of people to go around with, and guarantees entry too.
Berlin Welcome Card
A must for easy travel while your in the city. Really similar to using the London Underground, get yourself a good app, and you’ll be fine, which leads me to…
Citymapper App
Not Berlin specific advise, but Berlin is definitely a city where this app will come in handy!
Christmas Markets
Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus (Mitte)
By far my favourite that we visited. This is where we had a ride on a big ferris wheel to get an amazing view of the whole market at once.
Weihnachtszauber at the Gendarmenmarkt (Mitte)
Probably the most popular Christmas Market we came across – the queues were so long on all the entrances that we didn’t even manage to go inside!
Alexanderplatz Christmas Market (Mitte)
This one was a flying visit, but still beautiful none the less!
Lucia Christmas Market at Kulturbrauerei
A Nordic themed market where we had the most amazing pizza for lunch! Small, but very unique.
Christmas Market at Charlottenburg Palace (Charlottenburg)
The most beautiful setting for a Christmas Market, and a great place to pick yourself up a hot drink in a souvenir mug.

Heissa Holzmarkt
The first Christmas Market we visited properly, and one of the most quirky.
