DIY Ceramic Effect Vases

I’m at the point of furlough where I’m trying to find new things and hobbies to fill my time. I’ve started a retro bicycle renovation project – post to come when it’s finished -, I’ve dug out my old film camera again – post to come once developed – and I’ve been saving DIY project videos on Instagram and TikTok.

My latest project was the DIY ceramic effect paint vases. I saw these on Allana Davison’s YouTube channel where she made these vases – and a clothing rail – and it looked amazing. I’ll be straight up – mine didn’t turn out quite as well as hers did, but they’re still okay for textured vases.

You will need

Vase(s) – old ones you don’t mind painting

Baking powder – make sure you get powder, rather than soda

Water-based paint

Plastic container – for mixing the paint in

Paintbrush

Stick – for mixing the paint

Start by mixing the baking powder in the plastic container with the paint. How much you need will depend on how you want the effect of the paint to look – for the darker vase I did put a little more than I wanted in, so I’d recommend adding the baking powder gradually, mixing it together, until you’re happy with the paint.

Next, paint it onto the vase. You may need to add a couple of coats of paint for this. It’s quite hard going, especially if you wanted it to be thicker, but keep at it. When you’ve finished, leave the vases to dry for an hour or so. Try not to touch them while they’re still wet as it may knock off the paint.

And you’re done! DIY doesn’t get much simpler than this. If you give this a go let me know how you get on!

xx
