I’ve said many, many times that Halloween is probably my favourite holiday of the year – but it isn’t a very inclusive celebration for the whole family. While the kids are – usually – out trick or treating, and the adults are drinking horror story cocktails in risque costumes, the furry friends of the family don’t get much of a look in.
This year, however, I’ve gathered together a few ideas on how you can include them in the celebrations and, let’s face it – with this year looking more likely to be an at-home celebration it seems more and more appealing to do something for them as well.
Kit up
I’m not a massive fan of dogs in costumes, mainly because all the dogs I’ve had have either been too rough to keep a costume nice, or it’s been Bob who is terrified of costumes usually. At the moment there’s some cute options out there that don’t mean swamping your dog – if they’re at all like mine – in a totally embarrassing costume.
Or, make your own….
The hype this year is dog-ghost costumes, and they’re so easy to make. Take one white sheet, and cut out a snout hole, and two eye holes – make sure you get them all in the right places so it’s comfy for your pooch. And if you cock up the positioning of the eyeholes just do what I did, and use them as holes to poke the ears through.
Tic or Treat
We know the pooches will ALWAYS go for the treat option, not matter what the other option is. Halloween always used to be the time of year when we can gorge out on extra special treats. So, treat your dog to an extra special treat for Halloween too.
Carrot and Pumpkin Healthy Bites
Or, make your own…
1 Banana
60g Sweet Potato
160g Oats
Boil your sweet potato in small chunks, and drain and set aside after about 15 minutes. Seperately to this, blend together your oats until they have a flour-like consistency. Mix together the banana and sweet potato, and blend until smooth. Add your oat-flour.
Mix together, and then use your hands to form a dough. Wrap the dough in cling film and keep in the fridge for at least six hours – this is important so that the oats absorb moisture and stop your dogs tummy from swelling.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C, and roll out the dough to around 1cm thick. Use a cutter to cut out your biscuits, and place on a lined baking tray. Bake for 30-35 minutes, and when they’re cooled you can give to your dog – in small doses! – to enjoy.
