I did a post last year on How to Fulfil Your Wanderlust while in Lockdown. I was feeling sad because I’d already had two holidays cancelled. What was going to be my big year of travel had fallen apart, and I needed to find new ways to travel – without actually leaving the house. And I know I wasn’t the only one, so it felt like a great conversation to start.
Almost a year later, and with more months left of no potential travel abroad – at least – I wanted to revisit the idea with updates on what I’ve been doing. Not only looking at any new ideas, but also looking over the old ones. I’ve gathered together some of my favourite things for each point as well. As always, if there’s anything you think I’ve left out, pop them in the comments!
0.1 Start planning your future trips.
Now that there’s a bit of an end to the restrictions in sight, it feels like we can start thinking about planning our holidays. Whether or not you feel comfortable to start actually booking things in the diary, it’s definitely a lot safer to start planning what the next trip is at least going to be. Start thinking about the where and what’s now, and the rest can come later.
0.2 Put together your own bucket lists.
I’ve been working on mine, and it worked so much for getting me thinking about what my travel is going to be like once I can get back to it. So far I’ve made my Ultimate Bucket List, where I’ve listed everything I want to do all over the world. Then I’ve also made a UK Bucket List of the things I want to do closer to home. If you haven’t check them out yet be sure to, and let me know if there’s anything you’d add in the comments!
0.3 Watch Travel Vlogs
Especially at the start of lockdown, I found my travel needs by watching travel vlogs on YouTube. This one doesn’t always work, it can feel you with a bit of sadness that it’s not currently the same as it was, but for me it was nice every now and then.
Helen Anderson… The Scottish Highlands and the NC500
Samantha Maria… Solo Trip to Copenhagen
Elena Taber… I Solo Backpacked in Berlin, Germany
Kate La Vie… A Weekend in Poland
Tanya Burr… 24hrs in Paris and Plant Shopping
0.4 Read Travel Stories
By this I mean novels that involve travel. My personal favourite that I’ve read so far has been Around the World in 80 Days. There’s loads of stories to choose from, both real and fictional, and they don’t feel as hardgoing because they’re just stories and you can use your own imagination.
0.5 Cook a recipe
Maybe it’s a destination based recipe, or a recipe that you had in a location, but cooking a recipe not only takes you back through the taste, but also makes you embrace the smells and sights. Plus, it’s an excuse to completely indulge.
0.6 Read travel blogs
There’s a big range of blog types as well, whether you fancy a travel guide for a specific location, or a photo-based post. My personal favourite at the moment are solo-female traveller posts with advice – my solo trip to Hong Kong last October didn’t go ahead sadly. But it’s definitely something I’d love to experience at some point. I’ve popped some of my current favourites below;
The Blonde Abroad… here
Finding Alexx… here
Passport to Eden… here
0.7 Flick through travel photography books
This is my absolute favourite thing to do. After I studied photography at college I developed a love of just looking at photographs, hence why I asked for the Accidentally Wes Anderson book for Christmas.
0.8 Search wanderlust on Pinterest
Who doesn’t have a Pinterest board dedicated to travel lust? Mine is filled with lavish pools, impressive cities, and exotic forests. Plus I make separate boards for destinations I’m actually going to, which I also add travel tips and advice to, as well as photo inspiration while I’m on holiday. You can find my Wanderlust board here…
0.9 Put together a holiday playlist
I’ve got songs that I listened to on different vacations, and as soon as they come on during my shuffle, they take me right back. I’ve popped some of mine below;
Something Good, Alt J… Sunbathing by the Pool in Malta
Losing It, Fisher… Partying in Berlin
Rasputin, Boney M… Finding the cheese room in Berlin
0.10 Reminisce with your travel buddies
Nothing beats a catch up, especially when you’re talking about great memories. Don’t attempt to fulfil your wanderlust alone, invite your travel buddies to do it with you.
I love this, cooking a recipe from another country is something that hadn’t crossed my mind! Now I’m thinking I could have a whole themed night dedicated to places I want to travel! I also love flicking through travel photography books, it’s what gets me really excited for going away somewhere! Loads of great ideas in here!

That’s so true – once you find the right balance between reminiscing so much it makes you sad, and getting yourself excited for what’s to come it’s a winner!

I’m definitely looking to plan future trips soon, I need it! I was thinking of posting a travel bucket list on my blog and you’ve helped me make my decision, I will!! I would never have thought to put together a holiday playlist, it’s such a good idea! x
