FitBit: Is It Worth It?

I’ve had a Fitbit on my wishlist for a long time, but could never really justify it in my head. It seemed like a lot of money for something I’d use to count my steps. But, when I was putting together my Valentine’s Day Gift List it came up, and again when I made my Weekly Workout Plan. And so eventually I bit the bullet and ordered one.

Today’s post is for anyone who’s feeling in the same place I was a few weeks ago. If you’re thinking of buying a Fitbit, or even just thinking about it now you’ve stumbled across this post. This is the post for you. If you have one already, or if you’re just thinking of it, let me know in the comments. I’d love to know what you think!

Why Did I (Finally) Decide to Buy One?

With a third lockdown on its way, I decided to put a big push on my fitness. I updated my workout plan, bought a few bits of equipment to help me, and started actually logging my workouts properly on the MapMyRun app. I kind of wanted a way to log my workouts without the effort and guesswork, and I paid no attention to things like calories burned or heart rate because, for one, I didn’t understand it. And for another, I would only have been guessing, and that doesn’t really add to anything.

I’ll be honest, there’s also the aesthetic influence that hit me. I follow a lot of fitness accounts on Instagram, and a lot of them are wearing FitBits. That definitely influenced me when I was on the edge of deciding that I wanted one.

Which one Have I Got?

I went for the FitBit Versa 2. I was torn between this one and the Versa 3, but in the end, for the price different, the Versa 2 does everything – and more – that I need it to. And for someone who was still a little unsure about whether it was the right decision to get one at all, I thought it was best to go for the cheaper option.

I also looked at the Inspire 2 and Charge 4, but I preferred the look of the larger clock face, so didn’t really consider getting either of those.

How Has it Affected my Workouts?

I feel like I put more effort into my workouts now. I find that throughout my workout I’m checking on my heart rate zone, and trying to keep it up for as long as possible. Whereas before I’d be thinking that I’m probably trying my best, but there’s no real way to prove it to myself.

It also sets me targets for the day and week in the app, which makes me want to exercise. It gives me the number of steps that it wants me to reach for the day, which means I’m more likely to go for a walk. Then it gives me active minutes targets for the day as well, which tips me over the edge if I’m considering not doing my workout for the day. There’s also in app challenges, like virtual walking distances, to complete.

How Has it Affected Other Things?

Mainly my walking and my water consumption. Fitbit really easily works out what I should be drinking, and so when I log it, it takes off the amount I’ve entered from my daily target. Drinking enough water in the day is always something I struggled with, and I think my main problem was having nowhere to log it, and not really knowing how much I should be aiming for.

I also found out by logging my food through the app that I wasn’t eating as many calories as I was working off. This explained why I’d been feeling a bit off by the end of the day, and meant I could work on it. I’ve never been one for strict calorie counting, but actually having an easy way to do it meant that I found out where I was going wrong.

Would I Recommend?

Honestly, it’s a big yes from me! Before getting my Fitbit I’d tried a cheaper version and wasn’t that happy with it, but I’ve been so happy with my Fitbit experience so far. I’d say it’s worth it if your making a big effort with more fitness like me, or even if you’re just thinking about other things, like your steps. It’s great at encouraging you to get up out the chair and get some fresh air. 10/10 would recommend!

I’ve heard fantastic things about FitBits over the years, but I’ve never gotten myself one. I guess I just haven’t felt like it’s essential since I very rarely work out or walk as much as I should due to my chronic illness. One of these days, I hope to find a way to remain active despite my health, but for now, I might need to look into one of these for my husband, who would really benefit from something like this!

Getting a Fitbit was a great choice for me as well. Having that incentive to get to 10000 steps a day has made a huge impact on my life. The one thing I haven’t taken advantage of is the food tracker on the app, but you have reminded me about that, so I am going to do my best to start using that.

I had one before getting an Apple Watch, but it struggled to work properly because…short legs problems – like, very short legs, not even kidding! – but my mum loved hers until it stopped working.

This was so interesting! I’ve recently taken up a bit of a health kick, and I’ve been trying to figure out which watch to go for. I’ll definitely look into this one!

I found this really helped me with my health kick – even just helping me keep an eye on how many steps I was doing each day!
